Officials recovered 10 gold bars worth Rs 70 crore in a major operation at the Kolkata International Airport on Wednesday. The gold bars weighing around 1 kg and 167 grams were found wrapped in plastic wrap and hidden under the feet and clothes of a 40-year-old man named Vivash Jana.
According to sources, Jana was detained by Central Industrial Security (CISF) personnel on suspicion at the check-in point. CISF officials said each leg of Jana had five gold bars, making a total of 10 gold bars. Jana was booked on a flight to Delhi from Kolkata when he was detained by CISF personnel.
They are currently investigating possible links to smuggling. The recovered gold has an approximate market value of Rs 70.62 lakh. After the ČISF detained Jan, they handed him over to the customs department for further investigation. This is not the first time gold has been recovered from an airport in India as in recent months gold worth nearly Rs. 70 lakhs was also recovered from Bengaluru airport.
In this incident, the traveler was said to be carrying gold worth Rs. 69.40 lakhs hidden in his slippers. He was detained after he was spotted with at least 1.2 kg of gold in his hand. The increasing number of incidents involving smuggled gold highlights the need for increased security measures at airports to prevent such illegal activities.
